The freedom of movement of refugee persons is a fundamental right recognized by international and national law, but it may be subject to limitations for reasons of national security, public health, or immigration control. It is provided for in the European Directive 2011/95/EU on standards for the granting of international protection that refugees have the right to move freely within the European Union (EU). However, the freedom of movement of refugees in Europe may be limited by the need for a visa or residence permit. In addition, some EU member states have reintroduced border controls for reasons of national security or to prevent irregular immigration, which may also limit the free movement of refugees
