What is a student residence permit?

A long-stay visa or a student residence permit allows its holder to come to France to study in an educational institution.

Foreign residents in France may apply to renew their residence permit with the prefecture of their place of residence in France.

What are the requirements for obtaining or renewing a student residence permit?

  • Proof of enrollment (or registration) in a higher education or training institution
  • Documentation of your most recent degree(s)

  • Proof of residence in France

What documents are required to obtain or renew a student residence permit?

  • Enrollment certificate issued by an educational institution in France
  • Most recent diplomas obtained in France
  • Proof of successful completion of the previous academic year (certificate of success, transcripts, attendance certificate, etc.)
  • Proof of monthly income of at least 615 euros
  • Certificate of health insurance coverage for the duration of the stay
  • Valid long-stay visa or student residence permit
  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of nationality
  • Proof of residence
  • Sworn statement of non-polygamy (if married and from a country allowing polygamy)

What are the reasons for refusal of a student residence permit?

The relevant prefecture may refuse a student residence permit. Indicatively, the most common reasons for refusal are:

  • Non-authenticity of the civil status document produced by the foreigner (e.g. errors or omissions on the document, lack of mandatory information, etc.)
